Known as the Golden Isles, Jekyll Island State Park has been hosting visitors to its picturesque beaches for over 75 years, but its history begins long before its establishment as a State Park. The island is scattered with live oaks, historic homes and buildings. The beaches are widely used as covers for magazines and the dunes are home to hundreds of sea turtle nests each and every year.
Join WILD on our ladies only Jekyll Island Camping Adventure, where we will have an opportunity to learn about local native species, bicycle under giant oak trees, stroll through the historic district and put our toes in the sand.
Friday morning we will depart Columbus and head to Jekyll Island, where we will eat lunch before meeting up with a local ranger for a private Gatorology tour- which is a unique eco experience to learn more about this widely feared (but native) species on Jekyll. After our tour we will head to our campsite to set up, eat a delicious camp cooked meal and for a walk to the stunning Driftwood Beach.
On Saturday we will wake, eat a camp breakfast and head down to the bike barn, as we will be exploring the island completely by bicycle. Starting at the barn we will head up and bike the north end of the island, arriving to the historic district for lunch. After a break to walk around and shop we will pop back on our bikes and head towards the southern, and less established part of the island, where the trails will take us through the small strip of maritime forest between the intercostal and costal section of the island. After a day of bicycling we will head back to our campsite for the afternoon and a early dinner before heading out on our evening Dolphin Cruise. Wrapping up our day with a campfire under the stars.
Sunday morning we will awake, pack up and eat breakfast at camp, then head over to the Sea Turtle Center - where we will learn more about this iconic island species, and have an chance to see some of the turtles that are being treated for various conditions before heading back to Columbus and arriving in the early evening.
