About this Event
The Association of Haitian Professionals - AHP is joining with other Community Entities among them: Haitian Ladies Network (HLN), Komite Ayiti Inc. , Komite pou Avansman Lang Kreyòl (KOMALAK) and One Diaspora to collaborate for the Washington DC's Big Premiere of Jean Jacques Dessalines: the Man Who Defeated Napoleon Bonaparte.
This DocuFilm by Arnold Antonin (2022, in Kreyòl and French with English subtitles) released in February recounts the iconic journey of Dessalines: Haiti's mythical figure and main founder. The film restores this Founding Father of Haiti (France's former richest Colony of Saint-Domingue as known then) in his complexity and opens a debate on the endemic cycle of Haitian crises and colonial heritage.
Arnold Antonin, the award winning filmmaker of this outstanding documentary, will be present for a QA session after the screening.
Join us on April 10, 2022 at the AFI Silver Spring [ Silver II Theatre].
Secure your tickets early, as space is limited.*
*Note: Additional screening(s) are actively being sought and may be announced, if available.
Compliance: Vaccination proof–or– negative Covid PCR test required for entry. Masks required.
Be among those to watch this documentary film, based on Jean Jacques Dessalines' remarkable rise from slavery; his successful unification of command of the competing armies of revolted Slaves and Freed People of Color against French enslavers, his victory march through Vertières culminating with Haiti's Independence and Freedom for all in 1804, his Vision of the new Nation and Country.
Film synopsis: The Humanism and Genius of the Founding Father of Haiti's Independence, overshadowed by history, are restored by the new film by Arnold Antonin "Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the Man Who Defeated Napoleon Bonaparte", released on February 23 in Haiti.
The 97-minute documentary traces the complex story of the Founder of Haiti, who was assassinated in 1806, two years after the proclamation of independence. The Hero is then condemned to oblivion both in his country and in France, where his exploits are hidden.
