JazzBuffalo proudly presents "Swinging Cool," an exciting new jazz program that pays tribute to the iconic era of swing and cool jazz. Drawing inspiration from legendary artists like Anita O'Day, Chris Connor, June Christy, Julie London, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, and more, the presentation of a seamless blend of rhythm and melodic swing will transport you to a time when jazz was at its most elegant and coolness - yet performed with a contemporary flair that makes it fresh and relevant today.
The program will introduce a refreshing and exceptional lineup—Elliot Sneider on piano, Simon Fletcher on guitar, Mary DiCioccio on bass, Abdul-Rahman Qadir on drums, Tony Zambito on percussion, and the introductory debut of emerging jazz vocalist Vanessa Vacanti—this special program promises to deliver a captivating evening of swinging cool jazz.

Introducing Vanessa Vacanti

Vanessa Vacanti is a rising jazz vocalist, quickly gaining recognition for her talent and captivating stage presence. A recent graduate of SUNY Fredonia (BFA in Musical Theatre), Vanessa has already performed at notable events like the Syracuse Jazz Fest, Fulton Jazz Fest, and Jazz by the Lake in Oswego. Her performances create an electric synergy that energizes both her band and audiences. With fresh takes on jazz standards, swinging jazz vocals, and inventive twists on pop tunes, Vanessa leads her listeners on a captivating musical journey inspired by her theatre background.
Introducing Elliot Sneider
Pianist Elliot Sneider has performed around the world in jazz and vocal music settings with groups such as Michael Arenella’s Dreamland Orchestra, Asiko Afrobeat, Sunroom, The Rhapsody Players, and Players Handbook. His one-man show “My Brother George” about George and Ira Gershwin featuring Rhapsody in Blue has been performed up and down the East Coast. He most recently performed Rhapsody in Blue on the Main Stage at the 2024 Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, NY. He studied Improvisation and Piano with Paul Bley and Danilo Perez and has a bachelor's degree from New England Conservatory of Music (jazz composition), a master's from NYU (composition), and a Doctorate (composition) from Arizona State University. His compositions have been featured on TV shows and commercials, as well as performed at Lincoln Center, Jordan Hall, and Gammage Auditorium.
Introducing Simon Fletcher
Simon Fletcher is a versatile guitar player, composer, and educator based in Upstate New York. He received his BA in music theory and jazz performance from the Eastman School of Music and continued his musical training at N.Y.U, studying under John Scofield and Peter Bernstein, where he received a Master’s degree in jazz performance. He is a veteran teacher of 13 years and is currently at Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy in the city of Buffalo. Simon released his first record of original, through-composed, short pieces entitled, Soundtrack To The Season’s: Upstate New York, in June of 2022.
Mary DiCioccio
Mary is one of the region's stellar upright bass performers, having performed locally and regionally in various bands, ensembles, and symphonies.
Abdul Rahman-Qadir
One of the region's most prolific drummers for several decades dating back to the days of the Buffalo Jazz Ensemble, Abdul has a long history of performing locally and on the national stage and serves as the driving force behind mentoring younger musicians.
Tony Zambito
Tony is the producer of "Swinging Cool," Executive Director of JazzBuffalo, leader of the large jazz ensemble My Cousin Toné, creator of the popular “Live at JazzMondays" for 9 straight years, and a percussionist.
