Friday, May 17th, at 7:00pm, Jazzbird welcomes the Bijan Taghavi Trio Featuring Luther Hughes & Dom Moio. Featured artists include Bijan Taghavi– Piano, Luther Hughes– Bass, and Dom Moio– Drums.Bijan Taghavi is one of the most in-demand pianists of his generation and among the leading voices in jazz piano education. As a leader, the Bijan Taghavi Trio has entertained audiences across the United States, Japan and Europe. Inventive, elegant and accessible, the Trio is known for their fresh interpretations of well-chosen standards and Taghavi’s “lithe” compositions which “brings the trio’s [Bill] Evans-like side to the fore” (Textura). Taghavi’s trio recordings with bassist Will Lyle, TrioGram and TrioGram II ft. Joe LaBarbera, have been hailed as “one of the most refreshing piano trio records in some time” (The Big Takeover). Bijan also curated a Duo Series at the National Arts Club NYC, which included collaborations with Dick Oatts, Rich Perry and Jay Anderson.
Bijan is currently based in Michigan where he is an Adjunct Professor of Jazz Piano at Hillsdale College and performs regularly with the likes of John Webber, Keith Hall, Rodney Whitaker and Paul Keller, among others. A passionate music educator, Bijan mentors students in over 10 countries as part of his unique Video Exchange Lessons program; his Jazz Play-by-Play videos and Solo Piano Transcriptions have received millions of views online and are studied in music conservatories around the world from his alma mater, Manhattan School of Music to BB Music Academy in Tokyo, Japan. This performance is Bijan’s last stop of his 3 day Solo-Duo-Trio West Coast tour, where he will then stay to finish his solo piano album Arizona Sessions to be released later this year. Legendary bassist, Luther Hughes, from California, will be joining Bijan for this special night at the Ravenscroft. Luther was the long-time bassist for the Gene Harris Quartet and has worked with many of jazz’s most celebrated icons over his 40+ year career: Horace Silver, Joe Henderson and Carmen McRae, to name a few.
Bijan and Luther have a long and rich history together; as mentor-mentee, friends and collaborators. Bijan considers Luther to be a pivotal figure in his development as a jazz musician growing up in California. Since Bijan moved to NYC and now Michigan, he makes it a priority to visit the West Coast to perform with Luther as much as he can. They last played together “the day before the world shut down” in March 2020. During the Pandemic, Bijan was a guest panelist for Luther’s weekly masterclass at California State University Fullerton, “Hearin’ The Changes”, and they continue to stay in touch comparing notes as fellow educators. But this will be their first time performing together in over 4 years in what is set to be a historical evening and a swinging affair!
Experience an evening filled with wonderful jazz and choose from a fine selection of wine, craft beers, and catered dinner options for purchase. Check back here or visit our Facebook page the Thursday before this event for a more detailed dining menu. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the show begins at 7:00 pm.
