Mark your calendars for live jazz at Sarasota Art Museum, hosted by the Jazz Club of Sarasota!

Join us every second Thursday from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm for music and drinks on the Marcy & Michael Klein Plaza, and art in the galleries.

Sip on refreshing cocktails and enjoy small bites in the Bistro.

Each month features a different style of jazz, from straight-ahead to free jazz, bebop to swing, and so much more.

ABOUT FRED JOHNSON
Fred Johnson is an acclaimed jazz musician and master of the African oral and percussion tradition. Johnson, a graduate of the National Academy of the Performing Arts and the Masters Performer School of the National Mime Theater, is based in Tampa. He has recorded and toured worldwide with jazz legends, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, George Benson, David Sanborn, B.B. King, Patti LaBelle and other greats. For many years he was affiliated with the Tampa BayPerforming Arts Center(now the Straz) as Vice President of Education and Humanities and Artist in Residence. During that time he produced the Center’s American Music Festival and Art & Spirituality Festival. In 2005 he left to become artistic director of Intersections International in New York. He returned in 2017 to be community engagement specialist and artist in residence at the Straz. He is recognized globally for his presentations on the healing power of music and as a carrier of the African oral tradition. He’s always turning up more projects, currently improvising Shakespeare transformed into jazz songs for young audiences.
ABOUT THE MICHAEL ROSS TRIO
The Michael Ross Trio features Michael Ross, Bass; James Suggs, Trumpet, and Rodney Ruckus, drums. Michael Ross is one of the most popular double bass players in Southwest Florida. The bassist started out in a garage band playing blues-rock tunes with his cousins in his hometown of Harrisburg, Pa. He fell in love with jazz and soon was playing regularly. He traveled three hours each way to study with top bassists in New York and also began to write. He came to Tampa and studied music at the University of South Florida. Soon he was playing all over the South with Liquid Bebop, specializing in jazz. In the early 2000’s, he focused on composing and has released four albums.
James Suggs, a University of South Florida faculty member since 2019, is an active performer and recording artist in both local and national settings. Suggs is a sizzling trumpet player, receiving his Master of Music in Jazz Performance at USF Tampa and a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz performance at Youngstown State University in Ohio. He has performed at national and international jazz festivals, including Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he lived, taught and performed for 8 years He has appeared in cities across the world and on six cruise ships.
Rodney Ruckus began playing drums at the age of two. He is a Berklee College of Music alum and is touring all over the world with his group called Ruckus Elevation. He has recently performed with Joey Alexander, Billy Childs, Donald Brown and Wynton Marsalis at venues like Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Umbria Pass Festival in Italy, and at noted clubs like the Blue Note in New York. He enjoys connecting young musicians andskilled professionals.
