Join Jazz on the Move on March 15 for a soulful celebration of Hammond B-3 legend Dr. Lonnie Smith, led by acclaimed keyboardist and bandleader Ty Bailie. A pioneer of jazz organ, Dr. Lonnie Smith was known for his unmistakable sound, adventurous spirit, and genre-blending approach that fused jazz, funk, blues, and soul across a career spanning more than five decades. Bailie—whose wide-ranging career includes work with major artists across jazz, rock, pop, and roots music—brings deep expertise and passion for organ-driven jazz to this tribute. Presented by the Nashville Jazz Workshop at the Frist Art Museum, this free program combines live performance and engaging narration to honor Dr. Lonnie Smith’s enduring influence and celebrate jazz as a living, evolving art form for audiences of all ages.
Known for being Katy Perry's keyboardist since 2015, Ty Bailie’s diverse talent and interest in all things music has lead to him performing or recording with a myriad of musical icons including: Steve Cropper, Gladys Knight, Tanya Tucker, Peter Frampton, Wanda Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Dave Mathews, Robbie Robertson, Duff McKeagan, Ellie Goulding, Adam Lambert, Ann Wilson, Ace Frehley, Mike McCready, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Counting Crows, Mudhoney, and with members of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Yes, Tool, Snarky Puppy, Zappa Plays Zappa, the Fastbacks, Presidents of the United States, The Posies, Screaming Trees, and Truly. A founding member of the award-winning progressive jazz group Ego Band USA and indie rock band Dept. of Energy, Ty also music directs, produces, and leads his own Hammond organ-based jazz groups around his current home of Nashville.

Jazz on the Move is a free community program presented by the Nashville Jazz Workshop at the Frist Art Museum that brings the history and spirit of jazz to life through a dynamic blend of live performance and engaging education. Featuring a professional jazz ensemble alongside insightful narration, each installment centers on a legendary jazz musician—exploring their music, influence, and lasting impact on this great American art form.
Now a long-running Nashville tradition in its 20th year, Jazz on the Move showcases some of the city’s finest jazz musicians and educators, offering audiences an accessible and inspiring entry point into jazz history. Lively performances are woven together with storytelling and musical examples, creating an experience that is as entertaining as it is informative.
