Join us in the West Room for an evening of jazz hosted by Stretch Armstrong, featuring Michael Shekwoaga Ode, the Nigerian American drummer, composer, vocalist, and bandleader whose expansive musical voice has taken him from Durham, North Carolina to stages around the world.
Introduced to music in church as a toddler, Ode received his first drum set at just two years old and came up through jazz ensembles, orchestra, and drum line before earning a scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied under legendary drummer Billy Hart. He has since performed and recorded with artists including Kenny Garrett, Gary Bartz, Roy Hargrove, Ambrose Akinmusire, Arturo Sandoval, and Jill Scott.
Now touring with Kenny Garrett while leading his own ensembles, Ode has developed a distinct musical language rooted in rhythm, melody, and improvisation. On September 1, he brings that voice to the West Room for an intimate night of live jazz.
