The earliest form of latin jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz emerged in the early 1940s with the Cuban musician Mario Bauzá und Frank Grillo "Machito". It was the 1947 collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo that brought Afro-Cuban rhythms into the east coast jazz scene; today, it is enjoyed around the world!
Join us when virtuoso trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos performs some of the most popular tunes of this genre - “A Night In Tunisia,” “Manteca,” “Con Alma” - and more. Pianist Irving Flores and conga player Tommy Aros add to the heat that may have you shakin’ in your seat!
A celebrated musician, composer, educator, arranger and conductor, Gilbert Castellanos holds the distinction of DownBeat Magazine American Master. A long-standing member of the internationally renowned Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, he has a discography bursting with the names of some of the jazz world's brightest. Notable is his appearance as a special guest on the CD project - "The Art of Latin Jazz" - for three-time Grammy Award winner Oscar Hernandez.
A San Diego Music Awards Artist of the Year, he has also been awarded Best Jazz Artist of the Year six times. Two of his CD releases, "Underground" and "Federal Jazz Project," received recognition as San Diego Music Awards Album of the Year. He is: the Visionary/Artistic Curator of the San Diego Symphony's acclaimed JAZZ @ THE JACOBS series; Resident Composer for The San Diego Ballet; Founder/Artistic Curator of the Young Lions Series at Panama 66/San Diego Museum of Art, and Founder/Artistic Director of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory which launched in August 2017.
Castellanos hosts the longest running jazz jam in San Diego on Wednesday nights, where he can be found leading his house band in Straight-ahead, Latin and Afro-Cuban jazz late into the evening in the heart of Balboa Park.
