Friday, August 21 at 8pm, DW will be showing two great great films! “The Gathering: Roots & Branches of Los Angeles Jazz” and “Creation = Movement: The Black Artists Group of St. Louis”. Also, with a q and a thrown in!!
The Gathering: Roots & Branches of Los Angeles Jazz chronicles a multigenerational music project started in 2005 by Jesse Sharps, one of the bandleaders of Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.
The film features a stellar cast of players, including some of the hottest emerging talents from the area, and focuses on the Leimert Park district and progressive jazz scene of Los Angeles, covering the history of the music, and the long tradition of community elders guiding the young up and coming players on the scene. It features some extraordinary performances by local legends Azar Lawrence, Dwight Trible, Kamau Daáood, Michael Session, Naugu Chancler, and Phil Ranelin along with rising stars Brandon Coleman, Kamasi Washington, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Randal Fisher.
Creation = Movement: The Black Artists Group of St. Louis: At the peak of the national Black Arts Movement, the Black Artists' Group of St. Louis (BAG) was unique in their interdisciplinary, artistic approach to combating social injustice and exploring the far reaches of experimental performance.
The political and racial climate in America at that time shaped the group, but also produced the burdens that ultimately led to the group's dissolution.
This documentary seeks to illuminate the history of BAG, the group's political and artistic achievements, and the impact that it had on the lives of those associated with the group.
