About this Event
Beginning in the 1950s, jazz—one of America’s great cultural creations—was used as a diplomatic tool to counter Soviet propaganda. Great musicians like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillespie became global ambassadors of American culture while struggling with the challenges of the Civil Rights movement at home. Searching for a balance, they sought answers through the compositions they created, explored the new cultures they were introduced to, and inspired musicians around the world. James Ketterer, Senior Fellow at the Bard Center for Civic Engagement, will be interviewed by Christopher Warren.
