Led by nine-time Grammy winner (out of an astonishing 32 nominations!) and winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Medal of the Arts Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is the emblem of jazz for the United States and the world. With veteran and virtuoso musicians, bound by years and performing and touring together and an abiding love and respect for the art form, this legendary band is "an immense and perfectly balanced engine" that mirrors every mood, from "ensemble parts played with languid rigor to a stomping jam," (The Guardian, UK). In a unique partnership, Jazz at Lincoln Center has joined with Virginia Arts Festival to nurture young artists in a new competition that draws from jazz programs at Historic Black Colleges and Universities - and some of the winners will be showcased in this performance.
