About this Event
Robin Holcomb and Peggy Lee have been making music together for close to two decades. They have performed in duet at Big Years Festival, Vancouver Jazz, Roulette, PUSH festival, Something Else!, Roulette and Earshot Jazz. In addition, they have performed together often in a variety of larger settings. In 2009 Ms. Lee’s ensemble Talking Pictures recorded a CD featuring Holcomb and her compositions, along with Dylan van der Schyff, Wayne Horvitz, and co-leader Ron Samworth
In fall of 2023 the duo recorded for 3 days at Majestic Oakwood studios in Seattle, Washington. The album, to be released in December 2024, features 14 compositions – with extensive improvising - both instrumental, and with Ms. Holcomb’s vocals.
Many artists have mined the vast repertoire of early American music, but few with such originality, poetic vision, and utterly unique harmonic language. Composer, pianist and vocalist Robin Holcomb’s music has been called “staggeringly beautiful” by the New York Times. Through her times sharecropping tobacco as a young woman, as an improvising pianist on New Yorks’ downtown scene in the 80s, and three decades of creating an utterly idiosycratic catalog of songs, Ms. Holcomb has created a singular canon as a composer. Her recent composition, “Paradise”, was commissioned and performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra in October 2021.
Improvising cellist/composer Peggy Lee makes her home in Vancouver, BC where she leads or coleads numerous ensembles, including the Peggy Lee Band, Film In Music, Echo Painting, Waxwing, and Handmade Blade. Each of these groups consists of a different configuration of players from an ever-growing pool. In addition to these projects, Peggy maintains long-time associations with local artists such as Tony Wilson, Ron Samworth, Lisa Miller, and Joshua Zubot. She has been a frequent collaborator with Mary Margaret O'Hara, Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb, Sara Schoenbeck, Darius Jones, and the late Ron Miles. She can be heard on recordings by Dave Douglas, Michael Blake, George Lewis, René Lussier, and many more. Peggy is the recipient of a number of awards including the Freddie Stone Award (2005) and the Vancouver Mayor's Arts Award for music (2013).
