Fueled by lead singer/songwriter and ex New Yorker, Jay Robert Goldstein, Coal Mine Canary incorporates the many influences of Goldstein’s musical upbringings.
Goldstein’s vocals, reminiscent of a cross between John Hyatt and Springsteen, are a perfect match for his eclectic subject matter which deal with love, broken relationships and social issues. Goldstein holds down his heavily rhythmic melodies on his acoustic guitar and adroit harmonica playing. He has been featured on several Friday lunch concerts on Louisville’s public radio station,WFPK and opened for several top artists over the years.
CMC’s instrumental lineup consists of bass player Dan Neitzken, whose extensive jazz background, creates many opportunities to cross-pollinate Goldstein’s early Motown, Buffalo Springfield influences, always leaning towards an Americana folk rock persuasion.
Talented multi-instrumentalist Terry Steiden adds to the mix by complementing the cultural variables with lap steel, banjo, Fender lead and mandolin.
When the play dates and venues occasionally call for percussion, the Canary rely on the expertise of Miami native, Mario Carvajal, journeyman for several groups including the highly touted Pink Floyd tribute band, The Dark Side of the Wall.
CMC has also garnered a reputation for picking out classic and modern cover songs and reworking them to their own style, all managing to keep the original flavor of the songs.
Goldstein is presently under the guidance of Nashville, a/r representative, Jeff Teague, shopping his extensive catalog of tunes to top publishing houses on music row.
SadBlackLab is an alternative folk group based in central Kentucky. The arrangement, guitarist/vocalist Greg McIntosh and
violinist/vocalist Emily Miller, has been described as being very
“non-derivative”. The sound consists of rhythmic finger-style guitar, dark and melodic vocals, bold colors and fluid delivery from violin strings, and uniquely stylized instrumentation. The music seamlessly between moments of beautiful chaos and syncopated intensity, inviting the listener into the narrative sound space of SadBlackLab.
