Jason Kao Hwang – violin, viola, compositions
Ken Filiano – bass
Andrew Drury – drum set
With origins reaching back to the Asian Arts Movement and New York Loft scenes of the 1970s, and work in ensuing decades in Jazz, opera, film, and with artists such as Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton, Butch Morris, Wadada Leo Smith, Pauline Oliveros, Reggie Workman, Tomeka Reid, and many more, Jason Kao Hwang manifests a uniquely multi-faceted legacy in American music in this rare trip to Seattle. Playing together in various formations for over 20 years, Jason Kao Hwang’s Human Rites Trio moves through both freely improvised and intricately composed sonic landscapes with expansive imagination and ESP-like communication.
Bassist Ken Filiano performs around the world, fusing the rich traditions of the double bass with his own seemingly limitless imagination. A “creative virtuoso” (JazzValley), Ken has performed and recorded with a veritable who’s who in multiple genres—Anthony Braxton, Bobby Bradford, Connie Crothers, Bill Dixon, Vinny Golia, Joseph Jarman, Joelle Leandre, Warne Marsh, Hafez Modirzadeh, Roswell Rudd, ROVA, Pablo Ziegler, and many more.
Drummer Andrew Drury—a fifth generation Seattleite and mentee of Ed Blackwell for nearly a decade—has presented The Forest and his duo with DoYeon Kim at the Wayward Music Series. A pioneer of extended wind techniques for drums he has played and recorded with Myra Melford, Wadada Leo Smith, Robert Dick, JD Parran, Michael Doneda, Warren Smith, Mark Dresser, Elliott Sharp, Tomeka Reid, Kris Davis, and many more. Drury founded the innovative non-profit organization Continuum Culture & Arts in 2015.
Continuum Culture & Arts (CCA) is a multi-prong organization started by Andrew Drury that presents performances, publishes recordings and books, supports and incubates other artists’ work in a variety of media in many ways, facilitates international cultural exchange, highlights the legacies of elders, and brings world-class artists into vulnerable and historically marginalized communities. 2026 marks the fifth consecutive year in which CCA is presenting activity in partnership with Seattle’s Low Income Housing Institute. CCA is presenting Jason Kao Hwang’s Human Rites Trio at two LIHI facilities during this tour.
“…this is heavy, profound music.” – Philip Freeman, Downbeat Magazine
