Don't miss this great night of music headlined by Jason Cruz and Howl with Mermaid Island, Pete Repeat and The SFVs!About this Event
Jason Cruz of Strung Out brings his side project Jason Cruz and Howl back to Corbin Bowl for a great night of music! Fronted by seasoned punk veteran and artist Jason Cruz {of the seminal punk outfit Strung Out}, Howl is a shady departure from ‘punk guy gone acoustic’. Rooted in Americana and dark psychedelic romance, Howl flickers and sways like late night television noir, high on mescalin and American promises. Straying from punk expectations JCH creates an almost cinematic tone with its songs. Painting with words and melodies , swagger and melancholy, these American stories and lies drift through the air like cigarette smoke and old country radio.
Mermaid Island has been brewing chaos in the underground LA punk scene since fall 2022. Founded by Canadian vocalist, guitarist & songwriter Alex MacDonald, the band quickly became known for high-octane performances. MacDonald moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to write, but the isolation of the pandemic pushed her to carve out something uncompromising — a band rooted in community & emotional honesty. Mermaid Island’s sound blends early 2000s pop-punk energy with east-coast Canadian influences, melodic vocals, & folk-tinged chord progressions. In October 2022, MacDonald met fellow Canadian multi-hyphenate Rowen Kahn & asked him to join before even hearing him play. Their first acoustic show at Hollywood’s Hotel Café made it clear they had something undeniable. But recording could wait — “It was always about the shows. We have as much fun playing for no one in our lockout as we do for a crowd,” says MacDonald. They solidified their live set & presence in the LA scene before ever entering a studio. They finally tracked most of their debut album live off the floor in two days, holding onto the same energy that keeps their shows magnetic. Mermaid Island isn’t chasing a hit record — just creating a space where people feel inspired to pick up their own instruments.“We just want to play shows with our friends so we can remember what joy feels like on this shit show planet.”
Pete Repeat is truly post-punk—the Los Angeles band is the culmination of bassist/vocalistOren Cohen’s decades of experience in the LA and Bay Area punk scenes. Locked in his studio during the pandemic, Cohen channeled his frustration into the band’s first twenty songs, imbuing them with cold intensity and an unabashed rawness. While Cohen initially played and produced everything himself, Pete Repeat quickly expanded as the world opened back up. Cohen’s longtime musical collaborator Danny Rivera took over on the drums, and session guitarist Drew DeRieux joined as a permanent member soon after. Cohen, Rivera, and DeRieux came together to bring Pete Repeat out of isolation and onto the stage.
Prior to Pete Repeat, Cohen was a successful chef that pivoted to cannabis, utilizing his talents for bespoke edible, vape and beverage formulations. Products he creates can be found in dispensaries all across the US.
The band’s debut album, titled Time Ruins Everything is mastered by the legendary Howie Weinberg, known for his work with Nirvana, Metallica, Beastie Boys, and many more.
The SFVs are a band from the Valley and have been playing shows for 15 years with no plans on stopping any time soon. They're a fun punk rock band who incorporate many different elements into their sound including ska and reggae making them one of the more unique bands currently playing live in SoCal.
