About this Event
For the next seminar in the Jared L. Cohon Student Seminar Series, we will feature Matthew Melfi. Matthew is a Ph.D. candidate in Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He is researching hydrogen's impact on the mechanical properties of structural alloys through large-scale atomistic simulations. He holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Seton Hall University. For his research, he has been recognized with poster awards at CMU Energy Week and the MSE Graduate Student Symposium.

Matthew will be presenting her research titled "Computational statistics of segregation and dislocation interactions of hydrogen charged free surfaces and grain boundaries"
This research focuses on understanding hydrogen segregation along various defects band examining how this segregation impacts deformation mechanisms. This work uncovers the ways hydrogen impacts ductility of structural alloys and leads to hydrogen-embrittlement. We aim to provide guidelines for the development of alloys resistant to hydrogen embrittlement.
Lunch will be provided.
