The Communist Party organised a huge demonstration outside Middlesbrough Town Hall on Sunday 10th February 1935 against Oswald Mosely, the leader of the British Union of Fascists who was speaking inside. The demonstration passed off peacefully. Thirty two Teesside men volunteered to defend democracy and served in the International Brigade in Spain, of whom ten lost their lives. Thirteen men at the 1935 demonstration would later serve in the International Brigade in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Ten Teesside volunteers who lost their lives defending democracy in Spain are commemorated on the Teesside International Brigade memorial ( https://foxburg.edublogs.org/2021/02/22/teesside-ib-memorial/) which in inside Middlesbrough Town Hall.
