At Middlesbrough Town Hall on Sunday 10th February 1935 local Communists organised a demonstration against Oswald Mosely, the leader of the British Union of Fascists. The demonstration was a success, for Mosely was forced to stop his speech in the the Town hall and abandon the meeting. Thirty one Teesside men volunteered to defend democracy and serve in the International Brigade in Spain, of whom ten lost their lives. At least half a dozen Teesside men who served in the International Brigade in Spain during the Spanish Civil War were demonstrating against Mosley in 1935.
Four Teesside volunteers lost their lives in the first engagement for the British Battalion of the XV International Brigade at Jarama between 12th to 14th February 1937.
We will meet at the MIMA car park (102 Grange Rd, Middlesbrough TS1 2BH) and process to Middlesbrough Town Hall where we will be hold a short commemoration to mark the 90th Anniversary of the action against Mosely and to Commemorate the volunteers from Teesside who gave their lives for Spain.
