Japantown: What Is Lost, What Remains
Monday, June 8 | 5:30-8PM
Salt Lake City Library - 210 East 400 South, Salt Lake City
What does it mean to remember a place that no longer exists? Inspired by the short documentary Japantown: What Is Lost, What Remains by filmmaker Kelyn Ikegami, this event brings the community together for an evening of art, food, film, and conversation. The film follows Salt Lake City native Paul Iwasaki as he reflects on growing up in the city’s once vibrant Japantown and the lasting impact of its destruction.

The evening opens with a welcoming reception and art exhibit of past and present artists from Japantown, whose work reflects the vibrancy and resilience of this cultural enclave. This reception will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., offering space to gather and connect before the program begins. At 6:30 p.m., the film screening and conversation with the filmmakers opens to the public, with discussion centered on memory, cultural preservation, and community voice. Thanks to a generous grant from Firelight Media, this event is hosted in partnership with The Plains and Utah Japantown Advocates. We would also like to thank Salt Lake City Arts Council for their grant, in support of this event. We invite you to join us as we slow down, listen, and reflect on how stories of place shape identity and belonging.

Reception attendance is limited. Please RSVP to Jessica Rasekhi at [email protected] to secure a spot.
