JAPANESE STAB-BINDING WORKSHOPDATE: Saturday, June 27th from 1-4pm
Registration Fee: $70
The tradition of book-binding goes back thousands of years, spanning not only time but place as well. This workshop will introduce participants to Japanese stab-binding and creating a book with that tradition as inspiration. The structure is simple, functional, and beautiful.
The word in Japanese for bookbinding is seihon. In this method, the bindings are secured through the front and back covers rather than along the spine. Japanese Stab Binding was the method used for most books created during the Edo Period in Japan (1600–1868), and it was the primary form of commercial binding until the 1890s when it was replaced with western spine bound books.
Japanese Stab Binding is an easy and decorative way to make photo albums, journals, and so much more. Stab binding originated in the 1600's and is a process where you use an awl or sharp object to make four holes in the spine and sew decorative patterns through the holes to design a book. The process is low cost, requires simple tools and no machinery.
