About this Event
Mizuhiki art is a traditional Japanese art using paper cords. The core of the cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread. It is then knotted into shapes.
This Mizuhiki art technique has been used for centuries for gift-giving culture, such as money gift envelopes and gorgeous engagement gifts.
Mizuhiki artist Az Oakley from Happy JP Designs will be visiting Hobart from Perth to present this first-time Mizuhiki class in Tasmania. This class will be a unique hands-on workshop, applying traditional techniques to make modern style accessories.
There are 2 classes, you can take both or just one of the classes. Both of them are designed for the complete beginner who would like to learn a bit of history of Mizuhiki culture as well as a fun hands-on workshop.
This workshop is suitable for adults and ages 14 and avobe.
Class 1 Thursday 11th of Npvember :
History of Japanese Mizuhiki cords and basic knots and their arrangements.
In this hands-on class, you will first learn a bit of history about Mizuhiki culture in Japan. Then we start to learn how to make “Awabi knot”, which is the very basic but important knot which forms the basis of most of the more complicated knots. Then we will learn how to make “plum blossom” knots. You will complete at least 2 sets of earrings (or 4 charms for gift decoration) to take home.
Class 2 Thusday 18th of November:
Christmas colour earrings and a pendant
In this class, we will make western style accessories; a pair of poinsettia earrings and a pom pom chrysanthemum pendant charm, using the traditional Japanese “kakemusubi” knot. You may have time to try a larger size with 3 cords in the class or you’ll see a demonstration of how to handle more cords and larger items during the class time so you can complete yours at home.
Thighs to bring to the class:
・Scissors
・A pen (use as a tool)
・Laundry pegs x 4 or so
・A bag or small take away container (for secure protection) to bring your works to home
