Make and Take Workshop - Learn Japanese flower design to create your own beautifully delicate Ikebana flower arrangement to take with you.
About this Event

Do you know an artistic child that is looking for a creative way to spend a summer evening?

Explore the ancient art of Ikebana in this exciting class designed for kids to work alongside their parent on learning Japanese flower arranging. Instructor Andi Kramer will lead a demonstration and hands-on workshop that will inspire you to think creatively about floral design. She will then lead you in making a beautiful seasonal arrangement that uses plants collected from The Botanic Garden to create movement. Your container and kenzan, as well as all of the flowers and foliage, will be provided.

In this make and take class, you'll learn all about this intricate Japanese art form and receive instruction on creating your own unique flower arrangement to take home and enjoy. The target age group for the program is kids ages 10-16 and we ask they are accompanied by an adult to learn with them. (There is no charge for the accompanying adult.)

Seasonal flowers, branches, and container will be provided along with a reusable 2.5” kenzan (flower frog). Note the image here is for promotional purposes only. Your arrangement will be subject to instructor preference and material availability.

Students will need to bring:

1. Floral Clippers

2. Pruning Shears (to cut small branches)

3. Low box to take your arrangement home in.

About our Instructor

Andrea (Andi) Kramer

Andi Kramer retired to Traverse City in 2015. She began her study of Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement) at that time, guided by members of Ikebana International #165, a local branch of the group headquartered in Tokyo.

“I love Ikebana for its differences from traditional flower arrangements in a vase. Designs invite us to imitate and appreciate nature. Space and a sense of motion are key components, so stems and branches are carefully chosen to fit specific design elements. As we establish a quiet mind, we breathe our intention to capture nature into each arrangement, and feel the serenity that nature offers us.”

Andi is a Docent at the Historic Barns Park and Botanic Gardens, and is busy promoting the re-introduction of native plants into our local eco-system.
