Milwaukee is a city shaped by its rich history, vibrant culture, and a legacy of artistic innovation. Public art, from bronze historical markers to vivid contemporary murals, captures the creative spirit that embodies the passion and resilience of our community. It plays a pivotal role in shaping the identity and character of our neighborhoods, transforming ordinary spaces into iconic cultural landmarks.
In keeping with the Milwaukee County Historical Society’s mission to collect, preserve, and promote our city’s history, we are introducing an award to recognize public art that holds exceptional historical significance. This award highlights public art that not only enhances our city’s landscape but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging, serving as a testament to our shared history and identity.
The collaborative nature of public art, where artists often work closely with the community, allows these works to authentically reflect local values and the unique character of the areas in which they are created. Therefore, public involvement is essential in identifying the most impactful pieces of public art.
From January 1st through the 31st, we invited the public to submit nominations for public art that reflects the values and unique character of our community. After careful evaluation by our distinguished panel of jurors—Jeffrey Morin, President of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design; Marcela Garcia, Executive Director of Walker’s Point Center for the Arts; and Andy Nunemaker, renowned art collector and advocate—the three finalists have been selected:
Sherman Park Rising, Tia Richardson. Sherman Park.– A vibrant reflection of the resilience and perseverance of the Sherman Park community.
Green Flow, Pamela Scesniak. Brady Street. – A striking celebration of Brady Street’s history and preservation of the neighborhood’s unique stories.
Mural of Peace, Reynaldo Hernandez. Walker’s Point. – A powerful tribute to the diversity and aspirations of Milwaukee’s South Side.
Award Ceremony
The top nominations will be celebrated at the Janice and Stephen Marcus Public Art Award Ceremony on April 16th, 2025, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. During the event, the winner will be announced. The public is invited to attend this special evening, which will feature a presentation of the finalists, remarks from the jurors, and a reception to celebrate Milwaukee’s rich tradition of public art.
This event will feature live music, appetizers, cash bar, and formal award presentation.
