About this Event
Taken is a series of dance collages inspired by images from the National Ballet of Canada. In her collages, Levy primarily uses crystals and minerals. She also references mythology and magic. Taken evokes emotions and dualities that charm and captivate, suggesting sensuality and physical engagement. These qualities are explored through imagery and symbolism, inviting viewers to engage with the work’s composition and emotional elements.

Janet Levy is an American-Swiss sculptor and curator who lives and works in Los Angeles, Locarno, and Mexico City. The focus of her work is the physical and emotional exploration of stone. Through carving, binding, and suspension, she engages in a dialogue with stone, combining it with materials such as rope, chains, shells, branches, metal, found objects, and cast bronze. By referencing the forces of nature in relation to underlying emotions such as pressure, tension, desire, and sexuality, she creates abstract sculptures, installations and collages that reveal the concealed, drawing parallels between female emotions and natural forces. Through this approach, she explores the connections between materials and environments. Levy conducts extensive research in mythology, anthropology, psychology, geology, and zoology to inform her work. Sourcing and gathering of materials from the local environment remains an essential part of her practice. An enduring theme in her practice is to make the invisible visible by conceptualising female emotions and creating solid forms to express them.
She has participated in numerous artist residencies, most of which have culminated in a solo exhibition. These Include Broken Bones & Angel Dust (Casa Escuela, Mérida, Yucatán, 2022–23), Rapture Bound (Anchor Studio, Cornwall, UK, 2022), and Pecked (SWB Experimenthaus, Zurich, Switzerland, 2021). Pecked included three solo projects: Repeat, Pulse, and Pecked Times Five. Her second book, Janet Levy-Haus, was published in January 2024. She has an upcoming solo exhibition in February 2027 at Museo de Geologia, UNAM, Mexico City.
