Beethoven’s fourth symphony is a pure distillation of classical form, an artist demonstrating complete mastery of his craft. After a tense introduction, the symphony takes flight with a brilliant, optimistic passage. This good humor continues through the finale, with its famous chortling woodwind solos, which Beethoven himself described as “unbuttoned” music due to its casual wit. The concert opens with British composer Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, musical pictures of the sea at different times of day, and Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante, a concerto for four musicians performed by FWSO players as soloists.Works
