About this Event

Did you know that mead, a traditional beverage made from fermented honey, may have been Jane Austen’s favorite drink?

Join the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) Orlando Region for a live virtual presentation by Joy Prevost on Jane Austen and mead. Joy will explore the origins of mead, its significance to Austen, and the making of this delicious beverage.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to try a special mead brewed on-site by Zymarium specifically for this event. Inspired directly by Jane Austen's family recipe, this mead will be available on draft for the event alongside their full selection of award-winning meads. Whether you are a longtime Austen scholar, a casual reader, or a craft beverage enthusiast, join us for a unique afternoon of literary history and local flavor!

About the Presentation
"I am so pleased that the Mead is brewed!": Jane Austen and Mead
Presented by Joy R. Prevost, Sacramento Region JASNA member
Mead was a staple beverage in Regency-era England and holds a special place in household recipe and letter references of the time. This 45-minute presentation will show its origins, its significance to Austen, and the making of this delicious beverage.

Speaker Biography: Joy R. Prevost has been an active member of JASNA since 1992 and is a Board Member of the North American Friends of Chawton House. She serves as the Coordinator for both the JA Book-to-Fork Cooking Club and the JA Movie Fan Club. Joy has presented topics at JASNA Annual General Meetings (AGMs) both in 2024 and 2025.
About the Venue:
Located in Orlando's Mills 50 district, Zymarium Meadery is Orlando's first craft meadery. Utilizing unfiltered local Florida honey, Zymarium produces hyper-local, award-winning meads ranging from traditional styles to modern fruit and spiced varieties.
Food & Amenities
Zymarium offers house-made charcuterie boxes and an assortment of shareable snacks available for purchase. Outside food is also welcome in the taproom area!

  • Venue Policy: Zymarium is a 21+ venue after 6:00 PM.
  • Parking: Dedicated off-site parking is available at 1021 Lake Highland Dr (look for the sign marked Vein and Cardiovascular Center).
