Jams provide a space for free-play to integrate what you've been learning in class, or a space to dance for those unable to commit to one of our longer series this season. We have two styles of jams this Fall~ some with guided warm-ups and live improvised music, and others with a simpler format~ no music or guided warm-up, just a space to practice. We expect that the jams with warm-ups and music will get pretty full and suggest that you pre-register for these events. It also helps us when you pre-register for the simple jams, so we can have a sense of who to expect ( :

JAMS WITH GUIDED WARM-UPS AND LIVE IMPROVISED MUSIC~ ~ Seven Flavors of Jam, Traveling Edition!
Seven jams with live improvised music and guided warm-ups, “traveling” to different days of the week throughout our Fall season. Each jam will have its own unique “flavor,” with accompaniment by different musicians and warm-ups by different teachers.
The journey includes~
* 1 Saturday extra-long “Welcome” jam (as part of our Fall 2024 CI and Somatics Season Launch Weekend),
* 3 last Monday jams (hosted by Ray’s Collective Care Approaches to Collaborative Improvisation group),
* 3 second Wednesday jams (hosted by Toni and Coda’s Intermediate Spirit and Technique of Contact Improvisation group).
SIMPLE JAMS~ A simple contact improvisation jam. No guided warm-up or music, just a space to dance and create beauty together. Participants will be invited to share their interests in the opening circle, then we will move into open jamming with those inspirations as a palette for exploration. Space lovingly held by LAC CI teachers. Space lovingly held by LAC CI teachers. Third Thursdays (10/17, 11/21, 12/19).
*** Our jams are contact improvisation-flavored, but have space for solo and ensemble improvisation as well. Foundational competency in Contact Improvisation technique, including safe weight sharing and effective skills around communication and consent are required. The jams are not designed for total new-comers to CI and will not include any basic instruction. Past or current participation on one of our Open-Level Spirit and Technique of Contact Improvisation courses, or equivalent experience is suggested. Those with less experience are welcome to drop-in and observe the jams (they are gorgeous!) or move in solo.
Familiarizing yourself with these jam guidelines from another community is a good idea if you have less experience with CI jamming. We have our own unique jamming culture which we will speak about in the opening circle, and are also generally in agreement with what is presented here.
