Geelong world-first invention on display
A unique 1:10 scale model of the world’s first commercial ice-making machine, developed in Geelong in 1854, is on display to the public to celebrate World Refrigeration Day (WRD) on Wednesday 26 June at Geelong Showgrounds Museum, and again on Saturday 29 June.
The model is the work of Melbourne engineer and skilled model-maker Warwick Bryce, made to the patented design of pioneering inventor James Harrison, known as the Father of Commercial Refrigeration, and will show how ice was made in 1857.
To mark the 170th anniversary of Harrison’s world-leading invention, Mr Bryce will display the ice-making method hourly on each day.
“Harrison, the founding editor of the Geelong Advertiser, was multi-skilled; his Glasgow night-school education was a springboard to his discovery of how to make large quantities of ice”, says Mrs Lex Chalmers, OAM, an expert on Harrison’s life and work, and co-ordinator of the event being run by the Geelong and Region Branch of National Trust (Vic) and hosted by Royal Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society at the Geelong Showgrounds.
“We would like everyone to know about the amazing James Harrison, a mover and shaker whose revolutionary work influences our lives to this day”, Mr Graham Hobbs, President of former James Harrison Museum Inc. stated, highlighting this year’s theme for WRD—Temperature Matters.
The Showgrounds Museum also houses displays of early Geelong industries and collections of fascinating machines and equipment of by-gone years.
The event will be open for two days only from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
