Barry Harris was one of jazzβs most influential pianists, composers, and teachers and was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the bebop language, shaping generations of musicians through his performances and his mentorship. This special program highlights his compositions and signature approach to harmony and improvisation.Pianist James Austin Jr. studied extensively with Dr. Barry Harris and now serves on the board of the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz. He brings his NYC quartet with him including trumpeter Joe Magnarelli who is celebrated for his virtuosic and lyrical phrasing, bassist Adam Gay, a dynamic and versatile presence on the NYC and Tucson scenes, and legendary drummer Roy McCurdy, whose storied career includes collaborations with icons like Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins. Together, this quartet will channel the spirit and sophistication of Barry Harris, delivering a night of swinging, soulful, and authentic bebop.
