ABOUT THIS SHOW

Jake Blount is a performer and scholar of Black folk music based in Providence, RI. Initially recognized for his skill as a string-band musician, Blount has synthesized his scholarly and artistic pursuits into a diverse performance practice that has taken him to Carnegie Hall, the Newport Folk Festival, NPR’s Tiny Desk, and beyond. Sprig of That is a tabla, fiddle, cello, and guitar quartet playing a hearty acoustic stew of globally-inspired original music.

Jake Blount is a performer and scholar of Black folk music based in Providence, RI. Initially recognized for his skill as a string band musician, Blount has synthesized his scholarly and artistic pursuits into a diverse performance practice that has taken him to Carnegie Hall, Newport Folk Festival, NPR’s Tiny Desk, and beyond. His albums, released on Free Dirt Records and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, have been featured in best-of lists from NPR, The New Yorker, and Rolling Stone. His scholarly publications include “J*il the Zombie: Black Banjoists, Biopolitics, and Archives,” published in Modern American History. He also served as a music consultant for the movie Sinners, and performed on the soundtrack of Ken Burns’s The American Revolution. Blount holds an A.M. in Musicology and Ethnomusicology from Brown University, where he is working toward a Ph.D. in the same and a second master’s degree in Anthropology. A new string band record is forthcoming in September 2026.

Sprig of That is a tabla, fiddle, cello, and guitar quartet playing a hearty acoustic stew of globally-inspired original music. Pushed by producer Jayme Stone, the band stakes new sonic terrain for itself on Foragers, their upcoming full-length (due out in early ’27) featuring guest appearances by Sierra Hull, Olov Johansson (Väsen), Simon Chrisman, Rohith Jayaraman, and Wes Corbett, who produced their 2023 release bloom.

Inspired by genre-bending acoustic pioneers like Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Chris Thile, the band formed in Minneapolis, MN in 2018. Since then, Sprig has played legendary venues from Portland’s Old Church Minneapolis’ Cedar Cultural Center and NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall; warmed up stages for artists like Chris Eldridge/Kristen Andriessen, the Andrew Marlin String Band, and Charlie Parr; performed at festivals like Pickathon and Blue Ox; and collaborated with organizations like Carnegie Hall and Minnesota Public Radio to give educational workshops across the country.
