Warit (Tonnam) Techakanont brings another Korean collaboration to Smalls, continuing a thread of international projects and cross-border connections that have already brought Seoul musicians into the room. This time he joins Jaeil Ji & The Jazz Cats, a Korean-led contemporary jazz group built around Berklee ties, original compositions, and a modern approach that moves comfortably between standards and improvisation.
Led by bassist and composer Jaeil Ji, the group arrives with a background that stretches across Korea’s contemporary jazz scene and international music circles. Jaeil is a Berklee College of Music Class of 2019 graduate whose work extends beyond a single project, leading the Jaeil Ji Trio, releasing singer-songwriter material under his own name, and exploring freer territory through TAL – Dropping Point, a free improvisation project. His music has expanded across streaming platforms through recordings like Stars and Friendship, while this lineup also draws on repertoire by Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Sam Rivers, and Sonny Rollins, placing original writing beside modern jazz language and classic material.
🎻 Jaeil Ji – Bass / Leader
Jaeil Ji is a Korean bassist, composer, singer-songwriter, and bandleader, and a graduate of Berklee College of Music (Class of 2019). His work spans several projects including Jaeil Ji Trio, solo releases under his own name, and TAL – Dropping Point, a free-improvisation project exploring more open forms and collaborative playing.
In 2025, his recorded work expanded across streaming platforms through projects that move between jazz trio writing, vocal material, and contemporary improvisation. His compositions Stars and Friendship reflect a modern style centered on interaction and ensemble development, giving a strong picture of the musical language behind this group.
🎸 Sang-jun Ahn – Guitar
Sang-jun Ahn studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and brings an international background shaped by contemporary jazz and improvisation. Artist materials also note a third-place finish in the Monterey Jazz Competition, adding further international experience to his performance career.
🥁 Tae-hyun “TK” Kim – Drums
Tae-hyun “TK” Kim entered the Korea National University of Arts at age 13 and later attended Berklee College of Music, graduating in the Class of 2019 alongside Jaeil Ji. He has also worked as a live session drummer with SM Entertainment Jazz Trio, moving between jazz and contemporary performance settings.
🎹 Warit (Tonnam) Techakanont – Keys
Warit is one of Bangkok’s most versatile young keyboardists, active across jazz, fusion, and contemporary music. A graduate of the College of Music, Mahidol University, he performs widely with a range of projects in Bangkok and frequently collaborates with both Thai and international musicians.
