This thing we call life can be as brutal as it is beautiful. The entering and exiting. The loving and leaving. The triumphs and disappointments. The bearing, raising and letting go. It’s a lot to process, sometimes too much. Sometimes our inner voice, our psyche, rises up, screaming in defiance: what is this life? Other times it taunts, in an obsessive whisper. The trick is not to tune out, but to tune in. When we do, we can begin the important journey Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung termed individuation:
The goal of individuation, unlike that of the religious quest, is not union with the divine or salvation but rather integration and wholeness, the forging of the opposites inherent in the Self into an image of unity and integrating this into consciousness. - Murray Stein, The Principle of Individuation
Sarah Fisher records the human need to be authentically seen. Working in a variety of media, she creates portraits of herself and people she knows, loves and encounters. Taking its title from an abbreviated piece of advice Fisher received as a first-time mother, this exhibition presents a multidisciplinary selection of Fisher’s self-portraits ranging from paintings to assemblage, sculpture, video as well as her sculpture DISASSOCIATION I, one of three works in the series that anchored her solo exhibition, You Won’t See It Coming (Museum of East Texas, 2022) and the first in the series that includes DISASSOCIATION V, her first public artwork, on view at The Jung Center of Houston November 2, 2024 through October 2025.
