The Cumberland Theatre will end their 36th Season of entertainment with the play It’s a Wonderful Life based on the classic film of the same name. The show will run December 5th – 22nd. “What better way to celebrate the holidays than a night at the theatre taking in this memorable classic,” said theatre board member Beth Hilliker. “It is Cumberland Theatre’s Christmas card to our community, which encompasses many of the same traditions and values as this timeless story.”
Adapted to the stage by Kimberli Rowley and Seth Thompson, this rendition stays true to the beloved Frank Capra film starring Jimmy Stewart. It tells the familiar story of the saga of George Bailey, the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been squashed by family obligations and civic duty, and whose guardian angel has to descend on Christmas Eve to save him from despair, and to remind him – by showing him what the world would have been like had he never been born – that he has had, after all, a wonderful life.
It's a Wonderful Life is directed by Rowley and Thompson, who both have directing credits for this season. Rowley served as director for the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Footloose. Thompson directed The Merchant of Venice and Biloxi Blues. The show will also feature choreography by Kiersten Gasemy.
The show features a large cast of visiting actors as well as local familiar faces. Heading the cast as George Bailey will be Ryan Sheehan, who made his CT debut this summer as Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice. Playing his wife Mary Hatch Bailey will be Brenna Peerbolt, who has previously been seen on the CT stage in Murder on the Orient Express and Perfect Wedding. Returning to CT in supporting roles will be Reiner Prochaska (Clarence), Donna Schilke (Ma Bailey), Tim Bambara (Uncle Billy), Jennifer Clark (Tilly), Keith Petersen (Eustace), Lisa Podulka (Violet), Brian Records (Sam Wainwright), Sean Besecker (Ernie), Erik Alexis (Mr. Gower) and Andrew Watkins (Harry Bailey). Making their Cumberland Theatre debuts will be Kenny Heath as Pop Bailey, Griffen Detrick as Bert and James Santora as Mr. Potter. Appearing in a bevy of featured roles will be Jewelien Lowry, Kiersten Gasemy, Katie Zimmerman, Michaela Hale, Justice Courrier, Jaiden Courrier, Arianna Fiorentino, Cullen Clark, Monroe Campbell, Andy Duncan and Abigail Perrin. The children in the show will be portrayed by Emmett Berhow, Lennon Windle, Mackenzie Dunaway, Olive Wolford and Adalyn Perrin as Zuzu.
The design team for the show includes Rhett Wolford (set designer), Cody Gilliam (costume designer), Chris Muska (lighting designer) and Jaiden Courrier (sound designer). The run crew consists of Anika Jones (stage manager) and Katie Zimmerman (assistant stage manager).
It’s a Wonderful Life is being sponsored by Queen City Cravings and Fore Axes with additional funding being provided by Carl Belt, Inc and the Snow Family. It will be performed December 5th – 22nd with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. A BOGO ticket deal will be offered on Thursday, December 5th when patrons use the code WINGS.
