Spring and singing will be in the air at the Jarvis Conservatory on Saturday, March 4, when wonderful artists and music director and host, Frank Johnson, offer a concert of extraordinary freshness and beauty on the Bay Area's most interesting series, IT'S A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING.Sarita Cannon, from Oakland, has chosen songs from four unusual theatrical works: from John Dryden's Oedipus, “Music for a While” by Henry Purcell; from Léocadia by Jean Anouilh, "Les chemins de l'amour" by Francis Poulenc; from Evening Primrose, a 1966 ABC television play, “I Remember Sky” by Stephen Sondheim; and a favorite (with offstage flute!) from Leonard Bernstein's Mass, “A Simple Song.”
Vallejo's Roman Chavez will return to the series with an exquisite selection of songs: “À Chloris” by Venezuelan-French composer, Reynaldo Hahn; “Serenata Gitana” by Guatemalan-American composer Miguel Sandoval; and the compelling, ironic “Funny” from Cy Coleman's musical, City of Angels.
Tenor Kevin Gino will sing the beautiful “L'alba separa dalla luce l'ombra” by Paolo Tosti; “Comfort Ye My People” and “Every Valley Shall be Exalted” from Handel's Messiah; and the intense song of the American soldier protagonist in Miss Saigon,“Why God, Why?”
Joining the series once again, from far away Felton, soprano Jordan Best will bring a dazzling group: “Martern aller Arten,” a coloratura tour-de-force from Mozart's comic opera, Abduction from the Seraglio; the exquisite song, “Glück, das mir verblieb” from Korngold's Die tote Stadt; and a you-don't-want-to-miss-this number, based on the true story of – and made famous by – the Tony-winning theater and recording star Kelli O'Hara, “They Don't Let You in the Opera (If You're a Country Star).”
Concert events rarely have such a diverse and engaging range of music and artistry, unless they are a Jarvis Conservatory IT'S A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING concert. Faithful and new audience members relish Sheri Mignano Crawford's accordion stylings before the concert and at the “wine and tapas” intermission. Bring your friends, and come enjoy a special evening in Napa.
Tapas and wine at intermission is included for all patrons with purchased ticket.
IT'S A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING continues the first Saturday of every month at 7pm at the Jarvis Conservatory located at 1711 Main Street in historic downtown Napa. Tickets are $20 and available at the box office beginning at 6pm, with doors opening for General Seating at 6:30pm.
