What did the streets of Boston sound like 100 years ago? Come hear for yourself.
We’re celebrating Italian American Heritage Month throughout October at The Carousel Museum, and we’re delighted to welcome Tony Gangi and the historic Marino Persechini Barrel Piano on Sunday, October 25 at 2 PM.
Marino Persechini purchased this hand-cranked instrument in 1899. After settling in the Boston area, he made his living playing it on the city’s streets from 1900 until his retirement in 1974. Now, after an extensive restoration, the barrel piano is making music again.
Tony, owner of Great American Street Organ and the instrument’s current caretaker, will share the history of Italian American organ grinders and perform live. You’ll be able to see the barrel piano up close, and audience members may even have a chance to turn the crank. This performance will be fun for the whole family!
At a museum devoted to the artistry of the carousel, this is another story of Italian immigrant creativity and craftsmanship. Come experience a piece of that history with us!
