About this Event
Welcome to It Takes a Village - The Piano Quintets of Dvořák and Shostakovich! We look forward to presenting two gems of the piano quintet repertoire— Dvořák's Piano Quintet in A Major, op. 81 and Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in G Minor, op. 57.
Both Dvořák and Shostakovich attempted a piano quintet as teenagers and abandoned their efforts. Dvořák was so unhappy after the premiere of his original Piano Quintet in A Major op. 5, that he went so far as to destroy the manuscript. It was not until decades later, after their respective careers had flourished, that both composers returned to the drawing board and saw their work to frutition. Both piano quintets were written while the composers were on summer vacation— Dvořák in the village of Vysoká in the Czech Republic and Shostakovich at his summer home in the village of Kellomäki, Russia. These pinnacle works live on as proof that time, sunshine, and a little R&R may just be the perfect recipe for creative brilliance.
