About this Event

It Takes a Village: Helping Winston-Salem’s families and children thrive

At a time when many are reflecting on the safety and well-being of young people, we invite you to come together for a community listening and information sharing event about the ways we can support youth and families in Winston-Salem.

Join NC Local, community members, advocates and local journalists for conversation and a complimentary dinner. We want to hear from community groups, parents, educators and young people:

  • What are your biggest priorities for ensuring a bright future for your family?
  • What barriers do you face in finding resources you need for your family?
  • How can journalists better cover public safety, education, health and other issues?
  • What stories of success do you want to share?
  • Youth attendees: What do you want to see in the Summer After Dark program?

More than ten years ago, Winston-Salem convened the "Poverty Thought Force" that brought community members together for listening sessions to surface solutions to widespread economic inequality in the city. Community members and organizations involved in that effort are encouraged to join us to share what's worked and what hasn't since those recommendations were released.

Register by Friday May 29, 2026.

This event is presented by NC Local with participating support from our community and media partners:

  • How are the Children?
  • Forsyth County Assoc. of Educators
  • Forsyth Futures
  • Radio Onda de Amor
  • YEP!
  • WFDD
  • The Chronicle

NC Local is a nonprofit statewide newsroom that helps people understand issues shaping their communities. Listening to our communities is part of what we do, and we work in partnership with other news outlets and community groups.
