About this Event
Overview of talk:
This talk describes the design and construction of this modern interpretation of a Derbyshire Longhouse, from the perspective of not only the Structural Engineer (Jon Carr of Jon Carr Structural Design), but also the Architect (Jillian Mitchell of Lomas and Mitchell Architects) and Mike and Sarah Hannay, the clients.
The design of this 'Paragraph 80' house (which refers to a specific clause in planning legislation that allows one-off dwellings of ‘outstanding architectural merit’ to be built in the countryside) borrows much from the agricultural barns already located on this small-holding.
Speaker profiles:
Jon Carr’s experience incorporates a diverse range of projects in a variety of sectors, including Commercial, Retail, Sport & Leisure and Education, whilst more recent work focuses on 'design led' domestic / residential projects. Since 2007, Jon has taught Structural Design at The University of Sheffield’s Department of Structural and Civil Engineering on a part time basis.
Jillian is a Chartered Architect and founding Director of Lomas and Mitchell Architects (LaMA), one of the region’s leading design-led practices. LaMA specialises in low-energy, healthy and beautiful homes - whether one-offs or several-offs, and have had particular success with gaining planning approval for 'Paragraph 80' projects. These one-off houses in the countryside need to be of 'outstanding architectural merit' in order to gain approval.
Mike Hannay and his wife Sarah had the vision to buy and develop this rural site for their 'forever home', not just for themselves but also for members of their extended family.
