About this Event
The ISM Teacher’s Lounge is proud to present They Called Us Enemy by George Takei. In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in May, we’re commemorating this time by exploring Takei’s graphic novel, which chronicles his experience of being detained with his family in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II.
Join Curator of Art and History Education Cori Claycomb as we examine themes of imprisonment, memory, democracy, and more. In this virtual presentation, we’ll discuss how to bring this story to the classroom, the importance of sharing this story with students in the context of current events and consider how young people can serve as stewards of American memory.
This free, virtual presentation is open to all educators. Teachers with a valid Illinois Educator Identification Number (IEIN) will receive 1 CPDU for participating.
Educators may receive a free copy of They Called Us Enemy while supplies last. After registering, a member of the ISM Education Team will reach out to confirm.
