Island of the Vikings – The Galloway Hoard

When you step into theTreasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard exhibition, you are greeted with a recreation of a Viking boat, but this is more than just set dressing. It is a new 3D printed replica created by the Australian National Maritime Museum based on a unique survival from the Viking Age in Scotland, home of the Galloway Hoard.

It is based on the latest high-resolution scans of a Viking-age oak boat stem discovered on the island of Eigg, now in the National Museums Scotland.

Dr Adrián Maldonado is Project Curator for the Galloway Hoard at National Museums Scotland. He is an archaeologist specialising in the Viking Age and Early Christianity, and the author of Crucible of Nations: Scotland from Viking Age to Medieval Kingdom (2021, NMS).
