The haunting melodies and triumphant moments of ecstasy are interwoven throughout this famous work to explore the inner depths of love, loss, and the profound sadness of his mourning for his friend and mother. In a perfectly poetic fashion, Brahms himself said the work should have been named "A Human Requiem".
