In a rapidly shifting, ever-evolving world, stability and consistency are luxuries that have become increasingly coveted and protected. The innate human compulsion to exert control over our immediate surroundings have manifested in rituals performed in the everyday – from physical actions like having a coffee every morning or a nighttime routine, to spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation. These acts give structure, comfort, and even meaning in our lives, punctuating days of doubt with moments of certainty.
The repetition of actions or observances of repeated phenomena are methods in which we make sense of the world around us. In a time of unprecedented global change and a future succumbing to pessimism, many have turned to the introspection of our daily lives, finding patterns of familiarity to investigate and recognise. Indeed, to understand that which is beyond us we must first examine what is within.
Rites and Repetitions explores how rituals tether us to our lived realities, or allow us to escape and overcome them. The exhibition reflects the observations, personal experiences and interpretations of rituals through the contributions of four emerging artists, practicing across a range of mediums from illustration to interactive and photographic works.
