About this Event

Join Alex Kilbee of The Photographic Eye and a small group (max 10) to see the Irving Penn retrospective at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. The exhibit will be followed by lunch and a photography stroll in Golden Gate Park.

While touring the exhibit Alex will help the group explore and discuss how Penn’s approach to photography—particularly his use grey or white backdrops during a time when elaborate artificial lighting was the norm*—can influence our own photography today.

Alex’s goal—on this tour (as in his popular YouTube videos)—is to help people see photography from a different perspective to then find the heart and passion in their own photography.

Following the exhibit the group with gather for lunch and conversation at the museum cafe.

Bring your camera because after lunch the group will spend about 30 minutes photographing in and around the de Young then head out into Golden Gate Park for more photography. Within a 10-minute walk of the museum is the 6th Avenue roller skating area–great for street photography and portraits—as well as the Music Concourse and the Conservatory of Flowers.

Your registration fee includes museum admission. Food at the cafe is not included.

If you’d like to share your photography you’ll be given a link for a Google Photos album where you can upload your best images from the day and see what others captured.
