About this Event
Edward Hincks, a sometime fellow of Trinity College Dublin and Rector of Killyleagh from 1825 to 1866, was one of the leading Egyptologists and Assyriologists of his time; in his lifetime he enjoyed a European reputation and his erudition is admired even today. This paper will deal with his use of his scholarship in defence of conservative positions on the historicity of the Old Testament and his contributions to controversies within the 19th century Church of Ireland : his views on Bible Societies, National Education, ritualism, relations with Ulster Presbyterians, and the 1859 Revival.
Colin Armstrong is an independent scholar and Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Irish Studies, QUB, working on Irish religious history.
This seminar will be available both in-person and online via Teams. Please indicate your preference when registering.
