THU 14 NOV 6:30 – 8:00PM From radio waves to gamma rays, Invisible Rainbows examines how accessing light beyond the visible is transforming our understanding of the Universe. Hosted by the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC), IPIC Principal Researcher Dr Fatima Gunning will be joined by astrophysicist Dr Alfredo Carpineti as they explore how human ingenuity combined with cutting-edge technology is leading to groundbreaking discoveries upending what we thought we knew about the cosmos, including right here on Earth.

Included in this event is a look at Tyndall’s FAB, the state-of-the-art fabrication laboratories where silicon wafers and microchips are produced, and a prize draw for a copy of Invisible Rainbows: Exploring the Unseen Universe Beyond Our Senses.
DR ALFREDO CARPINETI is a queer Italian astrophysicist, science journalist, and social activist. He is the chair and founder of Pride in STEM and holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and an M.Sc. in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces from Imperial College, and a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Astrophysics from La Sapienza. Alfredo has been recognized as one of Attitude’s LGBTQ+ Trailblazers.
DR FATIMA GUNNING is Head of Graduate Studies at Tyndall National Institute, and Fellow of the Department of Physics and the School of Engineering at University College Cork, Ireland. Her research focus on applications of photonics technologies in flexible high capacity transmission systems; enabling adaptability with software defined networks; and in environmental and biological sensing. She’s an advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, involved in a number of programmes locally and internationally.
