USS New Jersey Honors and Legacy
The USS New Jersey (BB-62) received a Unit Commendation for its service in Vietnam and boasts 19 battle and campaign stars for its combat operations throughout World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Lebanese Civil War.
Throughout its extensive service history, the battleship has recorded only one documented combat death: Seaman Robert Oesterwind, who was killed by shrapnel during the Korean conflict in 1951. Chief Michael Gorchinsky was also connected to a combat-related fatality, having died in the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing while stationed nearby. In addition to these combat losses, approximately 21 non-combat-related deaths occurred on board during its service.
In 1998, a shipyard worker tragically broke his neck and passed away while working on the battleship. Furthermore, Irving Doremus, a gunner's mate, was killed in a training accident in the gun pit. It’s said that his spirit haunts the area around the ship's gun turret since his untimely death.
Recent restoration efforts have seemingly awakened paranormal activity aboard the vessel. Staff members report sightings of full-bodied apparitions traversing Broadway, the ship's longest passageway, during quiet hours. Security guards have also noted strange, seismic sounds reverberating through the ship, often accompanied by disembodied voices heard from the berthing areas.
