About this Event

Presented by the , and in partnership with the and , this workforce development training program introduces youth, technical professionals, new welders, and tradespeople to foundational welding techniques used in heavy industry manufacturing. Developed to meet Alberta’s growing demand for skilled trades and technical professionals with hands-on experience, the program supports multiple industrial sectors, including conventional and renewable energy, mining and minerals extraction, construction and infrastructure, and security, defence, and aerospace manufacturing.

This program is designed for:

  • High school students exploring skilled trades career
  • Youth not currently in education, employment, or training (NEET)
  • Professionals seeking to reskill or upskill through short-term professional development


Courses Included in the Program:

Beginner Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG)

Saturdays, May 23 - June 27, 2026 (Full Days)

This introductory course focuses on Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, a process commonly used to weld thin sections of stainless steel and non‑ferrous metals, including aluminum. Participants will learn to describe and demonstrate GTAW processes, select appropriate power sources and machine settings, perform basic welder maintenance, and identify filler wires and shielding gases. The course emphasizes shop practice on mild steel, aluminum, and stainless steel and introduces applicable welding codes and standards used in Alberta industries.


Beginner Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW / MIG)

Saturdays, July 4 - August 8, 2026 (Full Days)

This course introduces Gas Metal Arc Welding, the most common industrial welding process for steel and aluminum fabrication. Participants will learn to describe and demonstrate the GMAW process, identify power sources and machine settings, understand shielding gases and filler wires, and perform hands‑on welding on various thicknesses of mild steel using conventional GMAW equipment and mini MIG units. Alberta‑based welding codes and standards are also covered.


Program Details

Registration Fee

$750 for the first 12 approved participants. Valued at $2000, this program is subsidized through the AbAMI Hub. Additional sessions may be offered at a higher cost if registration exceeds 12 participants.


Credential

Certificate of Completion from NAIT upon successful completion.
