In this foundational woodworking course, we examine dynamic joinery, design, and dialed-in woodworking concepts. You will learn practical woodworking skills grounded in material awareness, tool specifics, safety, and creativity. This course teaches critical technique to expand your "toolbox" of skill sets. As a result, you will be able to connect the crucial steps between having an idea, making a reality-based design, and realizing your final project as an informed beginner or intermediate woodworker.
This course will explore essential wood shop skills including safe basic use of the table saw, jointer and planer, lathe, band saw, miter saw, router, biscuit jointer, as well as layout/marking/cutting of a dovetail joint, Japanese handsaw use, sharpening and use of a paring chisel, use of marking tools, and will culminate with a final project (occasional, side or coffee table) that students will be able to take home with them at the end of class. Students will also turn a mallet on the lathe to use as part of their small kit of hand tools.
If you're excited about working with wood, and want to build a solid platform for future success, this class is for you. Please call if you have any questions about this course or would like any additional information. 718-273-3951 (press#2) or email jim @makerspace.nyc
