NOTE: Bring a melodic instrument that you are proficient in playing. Fretless instruments are better for this style of playing, because of microtonal scales. Examples of instruments that would work well for this workshop are: voice, various horns and woodwinds, oud, çumbus, saz, violin, cello, keys, etc.
This workshop for for melody instrumentalists and vocalists is designed to introduce attendees to the key principles of Turkish makam theory necessary for understanding the logic of Turkish modal and melodic structures. Utilizing original ideas of makam theory and musicology established in his graduate studies in Istanbul, Peter Salvucci presents a means for understanding and analyzing makam in a practical and concise manner that is easy for beginners to comprehend. Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will have the necessary tools for understanding the logic of Turkish makam and reading modern Turkish music notation.
Peter Salvucci originally studied Performance and Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2007-2012), during which time he spent a year researching Turkish music as an exchange student in Istanbul, Turkey. Since then, Peter has relocated to Turkey and completed a Master’s degree in Music Theory and Composition at the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music (2013-2016), exploring experimental compositional techniques of Turkish makam music in his Master’s thesis. Peter currently continues his graduate studies at the state conservatory in Istanbul as a doctoral candidate (2018-present), focusing on historical makam theory and the genealogy, classification, and definition of makam.
