Introduction to the National Records of Scotland's Archives
About this Event
National Records of Scotland (NRS) preserves and provides access to Scotland’s archives. With records spanning the 12th century to present day, touching on almost every aspect of Scottish life, we hold and make available one of the most varied archival collections in Britian.
Have you ever wondered how you can access these records yourself?
We invite you to join us in General Register House (GRH) where we will cover some of the history of NRS, and show you how to search and access the archives to pursue your own interest or research.
During the afternoon you will:
- Receive a short tour of GRH
- Be given an overview of what the archives hold
- Visit our Historical Search Room and Digital Archive Search Room
- Learn how to handle original records safely
- Take part in a practical session on how to search the NRS catalogue and use other resources via the Digital Archive Search Room to help prepare you for your next visit
This session is free, but must be pre-booked. Once you have booked we will send you a short form to find out more about what you are interested in researching, and to provide you with some relevant information in advance of the day.
Please note: this is an 18th century building and the tour will include climbing two floors of original, stone steps. Please let us know of any access requirements that we can support with before the event.
We look forward to seeing you!
