Introduction to Sustainable Home Food Production

Have you ever considered growing and supplementing your food but lack a green thumb? Do you have dreams of suburban homesteading but don’t know where to start?

Join our Director of Gardens, Jason Kamp, as he shares his ideas on the topic in an indoor talk, as well as provides a guided tour of our very own raised beds, hoop house, and market garden.

This class is great for beginners and will cover basics and ideas on the following:

• Building raised beds
• Creating healthy soil and site preparation (using yard waste you already have!)
• When to plant what vegetable and how including by direct seed or by starts, time of year, and spacing
• Edible landscaping and edible perennials
• Garden tools, weeding, cover cropping, and more!

This informative class will also provide take home information so you can grow your own healthy food!

What does the cost of this program cover?

Your ticket to this program covers attendance at this two hour long program that includes an indoor talk, outdoor garden tour, and hands-on interactive garden work experience.

Non-Member tickets also include the cost of admission to the farm for a day. Please note that because this program runs on a Sunday when the farm is closed to the public (except for private classes), this farm admission should be used on another day that the farm is open within the year of 2025.

What should I wear?

Programs run rain or shine. Dress for the weather if your program takes you outside!

No ticket refunds within 7 days of the program except in the case of Gorman Heritage Farm canceling the program

How much walking will we do?

We will walk just under a mile total. Much of this will lead us into gardens with slightly uneven paths and around garden tools.
